Dogs that don't have a dog smell?

I love dogs. I think they're great. Mans best friend and all that, life is better with a dog. In fact research shows that those who have a pet dog tend to have lower blood pressure and live longer than those who don't.

But one thing I don't like about dogs is the doggy smell. You know what it's like, you pat a dog then take a whiff of your hands and almost vomit. With some dogs even when they've had a bath they still stink of the doggy smell. Cats on the other hand, well they're usually pretty good on the nose.

Well there's some dog breeds that don't give off the doggy odour, let's take a look:

1. Greyhounds

I had a pet greyhound for many years and they are a great family dog. And one of the best things is they don't have the doggy smell. They only have a short coat so there's not much maintenance and they don't tend to roll around in dirt or mud so they still relatively clean.

2. Whippets

They look like a mini-me version of a greyhound and just like their bigger cousins whippets don't have a doggy smell!

3. Poodles

Not a dog breed for a man trying to look tough but poodles are great for people with allergies and they don't give off a nasty whiff.

4. Labradoodle

Yes a cross between a Labrador and poodle, the Labradoodle is not too bad on the nose. They can have a tendency to roll around in dirt because they are usually playful but they don't smell that bad for a large dog.

5. Pomeranian

Those cute little fluff balls that look like dogs.....kidding they are a dog breed that just look like they've come straight out of the clothes dryer. These balls of fluff aren't usually that smelly and I must admit they are kinda cute.

To have a dog that doesn't have a doggy smell really depends a lot on how clean you keep that dog. All the dogs above will give off a nasty aroma if not cleaned and bathed regularly.

Interesting hub. I have to say that I've had many dogs over the years, of differnt breeds, and I honestly can't say that they ever had a bad odour, even when their fur was wet. We do keep our dogs very clean and well groomed of course, and any dog that is neglected in this area will have an odour. But I think that's due to the owner not caring for them properly rather than the dog itself.

Yes so true, not caring for the dog will soon make them smelly. But I do think that there are some dogs out there that no matter how many times you clean them they still have the doggy smell! Maybe my nose is sensitive!

Rhodesian Ridgebacks only have real "doggy" odor when wet or if they stay outside a LOT. I can put my nose right down on my girl (while all 65 lbs of her sits in my lap) and she doesn't smell doggy at all.

Come to think of it I haven't met a smelly Ridgeback either. The list grows.....

My short-haired Chihuahua has no doggy odor, even when wet. That is one of the reasons I chose him. He can lounge anywhere he pleases in my house and leaves behind no odor, and hardly any shed fur. This also goes a long way to his being welcome at outdoor seating restaurants. At one restaurant in Pasadena, the waiter brings him a high chair and takes his order. I doubt they'd do that for a smelly dog. :-)

Now that's something you don't see every day...a chihuahua in a high chair. I did read that these little guys don't smell. Add them to the list.

Interesting.

Greyhounds and Whippets are intriguing dogs to me.

The other three... not so much ha.

I hate that 'wet dog' smell.. We used to have a German shepherd/Lab mix and he smelled so bad sometimes. Even after a bath. yuck!

Nothing worse.

Yes I'm a big fan of greyhounds & whippets. I find that German Shepherds do have the doggy smell but people love these dogs! Anyways I prefer the non doggy smell everytime.

Another thing you don't see every day ... a Chihuahua fashion show. When my friend Mary Beth Crain published her book "A Widow, A Chihuahua, and Harry Truman" her publisher HarperSanFrancisco suggested she promite it with a canine fashion show, since one of the chapters was about us dressing up our Chihuahuas as if they were dolls. Yes, I know -- grown women! Close to 100 dogs showed up at Borders Books in Pasadena and sashayed down the runway in extreme fashion. Biggest howl (and bark) of the year. My dog said if I ever humiliated him that way again, I could look for a new pet -- perhaps something that squeezes its lunch to death before eating it.

High chairs and fashion shows....and chihuahuas! Believe it or not! I don't think my greyhound would have fitted in a high chair!

My six-year-old Miniature Schnauzer female does not have a doggy smell, unless you count bad breath when I forget to brush her teeth! This may be because her anal glands had to be removed surgically when she was about two years old because of infection. She has no problems without them, and I certainly don't miss them! However, I've read that mini Schnauzers aren't likely to be smelly on an everyday basis. Mine has monthly baths. She also spends more of her time indoors than outside.

It is possible to make a smelly dog smell good regularly but it does take a bit of an effort.
